On July 23, Neighborhood Allies hosted the second meeting of the Asset Building Network, which has been meeting quarterly since March. Over 30 people filled the room at Hill House’s Kaufmann Center — representatives of the Three Rivers Workforce Investment  Board, United Way, the City of Pittsburgh, service providers, financial institutions and foundations — to discuss ways to work together to help struggling families become more financially secure.

“We need to create an agreed upon cohesive vision for financial inclusion in Pittsburgh.”

The goal of the network is to increase the connectivity, exposure, and effectiveness of local program and policy initiatives that are focused on wealth- and asset-building. Examples of programs managed by participants are: free tax prep sites that provide access to the Earned Income Tax Credit; Bank On initiative that connects un- and under-banked individuals to safe bank accounts; and a college savings program called Fund My Future.20160623_111933
