Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor fosters collaboration across sectors—from internal audiences to the highest levels of government—maximizing the impact of purpose-driven nonprofits, businesses, corporations and academic institutions.
As Executive Director of the Tull Family Theatre, Carolina offers dynamic, perceptive, and innovative leadership solutions. In addition to her proven nonprofit management and programming experience, she brings fundraising expertise that has secured substantial funding from both private and public sources.
Active and deeply ingrained in the Pittsburgh region, Carolina has received recognition for her unfailing work ethic, creativity and leadership. Her aptitude in building consensus and uncanny professional sensibility has let to her inclusion in multiple boards of directors. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, the Board of Directors of Neighborhood Allies, and the Board of Directors of Space Challenge, a STEM-related education nonprofit. Previously, Carolina served as a Trustee of Awesome Pittsburgh, a founding board member of StartUptown and a board member of Pittsburgh Green Innovators. She is also a proud graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh Class XXX, and a regular speaker at the Pittsburgh Promise career development events.
Before stepping into consulting, Carolina served as vice president of innovation and strategic initiatives for C-leveled, a company that advances small and medium-sized business. There, she sourced and secured funding for the partnerships that she created. Prior to that, as vice president of Urban Innovation21—Pittsburgh’s acclaimed economic development organization—she directed various programs ranging from workforce development and State incentives for early stage startups to grant-awarding programs—all the while contributing leadership to all facets of the nonprofit operation. Carolina has also worked in the fields of public affairs, media, communications and marketing.
With an MBA and a Masters of Arts in Corporate Communication—both from Duquesne University—Carolina is an award-winning writer with an extensive project management portfolio. She completed her undergraduate degree in English and Secondary Education at Harding University, in Arkansas.
Carolina was born in Recife, Brazil and is fluent in Portuguese and skilled in Spanish. Growing up in a developing country has instilled in her a passion to advocate for vulnerable populations—a thread that runs through her personal and professional endeavors.
